Suwanee is Jam-Packed with Recreational Opportunities

Whether your “thing” involves shopping, museums, sporting events, hiking, historical sites, water activities, or just kicking back and relaxing, the Suwanee area and nearby Atlanta to the south and Lake Lanier and the Georgia mountains just a little north provide lots of recreational opportunities. Suwanee Creek Greenway

The Suwanee Creek Greenway is a hard-surface, multipurpose trail that meanders through four miles of wooded areas, wetlands, and wildlife habitat. The original trail was constructed in the early 1990s; a three-mile extension was opened in May 2004. The greenway connects nearly 400 acres of parkland as well as residential and commercial areas. Walkers, joggers, bikers, rollerbladers, and others can access the trail at a variety of locations. The trailhead is located atSuwaneeCreekPark,1170 Buford Highway.

Other access points are:

  • Near theSuwanee     SportsAcademy     at3640 Burnette Road.
  • Martin     FarmPark,      about a half-mile west ofSatellite        Boulevard.
  • Suwanee     Elementary School,      on weekends and after 4 p.m. during the week only.
  • George     PiercePark,      near the soccer and back softball fields.

Parks

Through its award-winning Open Space Initiative, the City ofSuwaneeis preserving greenspaces and creating new parks. The City newest parks include:

PlayTown Suwanee

This 10,000 square foot, one-of-a-kind play structure, located at425 Main Street, was constructed in just five days in June 2004 by community volunteers. Play elements include a tot lot, swings, slides, climbing wall, sandbox, and play areas built as a boat, cottage, rocket, and bus.

SimsLakePark

Located at Suwanee Dam and Tench roads,SimsLakeParkis comprised of 62 idyllic acres. In addition to a 7-acre lake,SimsLakeParkfeatures an approximately 1.2-mile looping trail, well-fed streamscape, playground area, picnic pavilion, and two 2-acre play meadows.

SuwaneeCreekPark

As noted above, this 85-acre passive recreation area serves as the trailhead for the Suwanee Creek Greenway. In addition, the park has two shelters, picnic areas, benches, and meadows for play areas.

TownCenterPark

This 10-acre urban park, located at the intersection ofBuford   HighwayandLawrenceville-Suwanee Road, serves as Suwaneea™s aœfront yarda and primary community gathering place. Its amphitheater stage provides a backdrop for concerts and other performances that draw audiences from around the region.

Lake Lanier

The largest lake inGeorgia,LakeLanieris just 15 minutes north of Suwanee. Boating, skiing, walking trails, fishing, golfing, and vacationing are a few of the activities available.LakeLanierWaterParkis open May-September.
