Fun Projects and Thanksgiving Traditions for Children

Each year for Thanksgiving my children have a part in decorating the childrena™s table for the Family Feast. One of their responsibilities includes making the napkin rings to hold the napkins. We take orange and brown construction paper cut in strips. All of the children that are to sit at the table take one of the strips of paper and write anonymously what they are thankful for on one side of the construction paper. We then take the written side down and wrap around the napkin and secure with a sticker or piece of tape. Before dinner we let the kids take turns reading the napkin rings and trying to figure out who made each.

We have even used the construction paper to make pilgrim hats and bands with feathers! My son was insistent on wearing his hat all day.

A project for the smaller children that has been a hit in my house: Window clings. They can be bought at almost any $Dollar type store and for any season of the year. While the adults are busy cooking and watching football, the kids are busy putting clings on any window that they can find! It keeps them busy for quite a while! My windows will be covered in fall leaves and pumpkins; I can hardly wait!

Another project that we have done many times over is the paper turkey. We cut out a aœgourda shape of any color construction paper, a triangle for the beak, circles for the eyes and we cover with feathersa¦ we have used paper feathers that we have cut out ourselves and dyed store bought feathers. Either way it will add a touch of Fall Whimsy to your home while keeping the little ones productively occupied!

Dona™t forget a trip to the library to borrow a handful of books about Thanksgiving and why we celebrate!
