5 Best Public Schools in Atlanta

One thing that many parents worry about when they move is how they’re going to send their children to school. Atlanta public schools can be a mixed bag; some are fantastic, and some are still improving. What’s truly impressive is that 5 schools have earned a perfect 10/10 rating from real estate site Zillow, showing that great schools in Atlanta aren’t actually that hard to find. Here are the 5 public schools with perfect ratings in Atlanta.

1. Early College High School at Carver

This school prepares students for college by actually letting them take college courses for credit. Instead of going through the trouble of doing AP and then maybe getting credit for it, students are empowered to learn directly.

This school is a triumph in that it has 0 students who have “limited English proficiency” in a school where 78% qualify for reduced cost school lunches. Overcoming poverty has been a difficult act, but the teachers and principal of Carver have shown dedication and hard work. It’s been paying off in test scores as well. Their lowest average score of Math, Social Studies, English, and Science is a 94%–which is staggeringly higher than the 68% Atlanta average. Bravo, Carver!

2. Brandon Elementary School

With over 1,000 students, Brandon Elementary is a huge world for children to make friends in, explore, and learn. The environment can seem intimidating for parents who want to know that their child is getting the best teaching and most attention that they can. At Brandon Elementary School, they actually will. Despite the huge population of students, the student to teacher ratio is just 13:1. Children enjoy smaller class sizes in addition to extra circulars to improve their experience. They can even start learning French!

The writing assessment shows that Brandon Elementary’s 93% score beats out the Atlanta average of 77% and the state average of 80%. Good work, Brandon Elementary School!

3. Morningside Elementary School

A much smaller school than Brandon Elementary School, Morningside has a 12:1 ratio of students to teachers, and 750+ students. At this school students can enjoy Spanish classes, band, and art classes focusing on drawing and painting. Additionally, Morningside has a very high review based on parents: a very solid 4/5, with several parents mentioning that an influx of people moving to Morningside so their children can attend the school was causing them mixed feelings. 12:1 caused a slight rise in their class size, but they understood why someone would want to move to let their child attention Morningside Elementary. Fantastic performance, Morningside!

4. Jackson Elementary School

Jackson Elementary School is changing the game by focusing on computer arts as an extracurricular activity. As technology becomes more and more important to our daily lives, the 950 students at Jackson are sure to have a great grounding in tech from an early age. It’s far from the only option, however: band, chorus, and art (focusing on drawing and painting) are all options for students who attend this elementary school.

All these options show in the test scores, as well: a healthy 96% score in the middle grades writing assessment beats out the 80% state average and trounces the 77% Atlanta average, showing why Jackson Elementary School is a school on top. Good job, Jackson!

5. Charles R. Drew Charter School

More and more people are picking a public charter school like Drew because it offers so much to students who might otherwise have so little. 68% of students get reduced school lunch prices. Even so, this school holds a 95% in the middle grades writing assessment and offers many more options than a standard elementary school. Students can pick extracurricular activities like dance and computer arts, a myriad of sports, and choose between Spanish and French when it comes time to learn another language. Amazing, Charles R. Drew!
